Income Tax Return Filing AY 2020-21 Latest Updates: Keeping in view the continued challenges faced by taxpayers in meeting statutory compliances due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the government has further extended the dates for various compliances, the Income Tax Department said on Wednesday. Thus, the deadline for filing income tax return for AY 2020-21 for individuals has been extended to January 10, 2021, from the current deadline of December 31, 2020.

It may be noted that more than 4.54 crore Income Tax Returns for AY 2020-21 had already been filed till 29th of December, 2020, particularly as taxpayers feared that the ITR filing deadline may not be extended again. The Income Tax Department had earlier said in a tweet on Wednesday that 8,96,617 ITRs have been filed upto 1500 hrs today & 1,67,093 ITRs filed in the last 1hr.

During the same period last year, 4.51 crore ITRs were filed. The tax department had earlier asked taxpayers not to wait and file returns early. The Income Tax Department had tweeted that “the Due Date is almost here. Do not miss the due date. File your #ITR NOW by visiting https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in”
